Palm Pre to Sync with iTunes

Palm Pre to Sync with iTunes

It has been reported around the Web recently that the Palm Pre will be capable of syncing with iTunes and will show up as an “iPod” when plugged into a Mac. This makes a lot of sense to everyone since many the Pre staff are ex-Apple employess and the creator of the iPod is the main man on the Pre.

This of course ed off Apple completely and a war of words has ensued between the Palm Pre camp and the Apple corps (pun intended). A rather heated exchange of words at that. Man o man, the marketing geniuses at Palm are really good. They have been mustering any and all the attention the can. From reports of a lack of phone availability on the launch date, to this latest iTunes development, Genius.

Wholesale Tea Suppliers

By Admin on June 6th, 2009

Wholesale Tea Suppliers

Interested in setting up a home business selling teas? Buying

wholesale tea from a distributor is easier than you’d think and you could save a huge amount as

opposed to the retail price. This article is a guide to tea, buying your merchandise and

finding suppliers for the product.
Tea comes in thousands of varieties and has been drunk since ancient times. It is the second

most popular drink in the world (second only to water!) It has, in its various kinds, however,

never been more popular than now in the West. Health food fads and an enthusiasm for a more

natural lifestyle has led many people to put down their coffees and take up green or herbal

teas. This is an opportunity for anyone looking to retail!
Even tea from the same plant as black tea (Camellia Sinensis) can come in a huge variety of

forms. Green tea is steamed, rather than fermented. Gunpowder tea comes in the form of

rolled-up pellets of green tea. Oolong tea lies somewhere in between green and black. White tea

is the least processed of all. Some teas are flavoured, for example with chopped jasmine

flowers mixed in with the tea leaves. Aside from all these, there are a multitude of herbal and

natural teas (most of which contain no actual “tea”) available – from ginseng to chamomile.

Most teas that are sold in the West are actually blends of different kinds of tea, often teas

from different parts of the world. Different blending according to the tastes of that country

accounts for the differing flavours of black tea found in any given country.
All teas are usually made in the same manner. Buds, leaves, or twigs of the plant in question

are steeped in hot water to release the flavour inside. Some types of tea are then sweetened to

taste with honey or sugar (among other things). Black tea is often drunk with a small amount of

milk.
Some wholesalers specialise in certain kinds of tea, or perhaps tea from a certain area.

Unsurprisingly, many wholesale suppliers of tea are found in China, Japan or India.
Be sure to check all local regulations that are involved when importing any type of food

product. There are usually more requirements in this category, than in other consumable

selections. Be sure you have also satisfied any specific requirements as far as duties that can

be substantial on all types of herbs.
This is not the only place to find distributors however, and in particular if you are looking

for certified organic or fair-trade teas there are other places to look. The internet has no

shortage of tea wholesalers. For example, try Republic of Tea to find suppliers of organic tea,

or Celestial Seasonings, which offers a blend of natural herbal teas. These suppliers provide a

more unusual product which may be more attractive to customers. Once you decide on the type of

tea you want to sell, it should be easy enough to pick a supplier that suits your need.

Get the Best Deal on Home Loan Interest Rates

By Rhett on June 6th, 2009

Now’s the time to shop for home loan interest rates. I don’t know for sure, and I certainly don’t have a crystal ball, but it looks to me as though the decline in the housing market has finally reached the bottom and we are beginning to recover. That will mean that mortgage rates along with home on interest rates will begin to rise as demand once again rises.

Five Steps to Buying the Amplifier You Really Need

By rachaelb on June 3rd, 2009

Every sound system is built to match someone’s idea of what they need, and sometimes certain components were not included. It’s quite possible to run sound without, say, a compressor to manage dynamic range in a vocal group. You can get by without digital effects too, although you can hear it’s missing if you’ve been using it. But a sound system without one of its key components – well, it isn’t a sound system yet. To get sound from a set of loudspeakers, you just can’t do without a power amplifier

Power amps can be very simple and rather complex, at the same time. There are very few user controls compared to equipment like your mixer and processors. But there are also some important facts about electrical amplification, and knowing them makes finding the right amp a much easier task.

  1. Make a Plan: Your main mix is just one of several signals headed for speakers
Every unique signal coming from your sound system, headed for a loudspeaker, must have its own amplifier. That’s because various loudspeakers within a sound system will require different amounts of power. Unique output signals are often being routed several places. Maybe you are powering matching (stereo) signals. Amps with only one channel might be “dedicated” to drive mono signal to one speaker component; three-channels are needed to send separate powered signals to the components of a 3-way speaker (high, mid, low) or 2-way plus subwoofer. Amps with more channels are made for surround sound, “zone distribution” systems, and other applications. Power is most often listed “per channel.” Channels are most often used separately, such as for stereo left and right (two mono channels), independent stage monitor mixes, and “bi-amped” or tri-amped speaker systems with discreet signals for horns (high) / drivers (mid) / subwoofers (low).

The most common amp design is two mono channels in a rack mount chassis. This may be simply because it affords some cost-savings and flexibility to house 2 power blocks in one chassis, but the weight of a third (and the loss of 3 channels should the amp ever fail) is just too much. Or it could be that since powered sound is often mixed in stereo, 2 channel amps just make sense (especially for smaller systems). It’s probably both and more!

Though housed in pairs, most 2-channel amps are actually two power amps capable of independent operation, to allow easier systematic matching of amps to speakers. Many also feature a “bridged” mode, which combines the channels for total power often much greater than the sum of the two (but less flexibility).

Each amp channel may be used to drive a single speaker, or a chain of several. Adding a speaker to the chain changes the “load” on the amp (measured in ohms, covered later in this column), so it can deliver more power. Note: total power is divided between all connected speakers.

When building or growing a sound system, list all loudspeaker output needs (mains, monitors, subs, etc) and their power watt requirements. As with most components of a sound system, the goal is flexibility. When powering loudspeakers, it’s also about efficiency – equipment that’s working too hard doesn’t sound as good.

  2. Establish Headroom: How much power do you need?
Any loudspeaker that doesn’t have its own built-in amplifier needs powered signal from an external amp, either alone or as part of a chain (such as stage monitors). Smaller amps may ruin headphone systems or “distribution systems” (intercoms, ceiling speakers, etc). Amplifier power is measured in watts, but there are some things you should know… Watts are defined, measured and reported (and advertised!) differently by many manufacturers. Some figures are “peak” measurements, the most an amp can momentarily handle. More important is to have enough “continuous” (also called “average,” “program,” “music,” or “RMS”) watts to match the watts/ohms requirement of the loudspeaker(s) that the amp will drive. Too low, and your under-powered speakers will “burn out.” Too high, and they could literally “blow up.”

Remember, amp channels can also often be “bridged,” or combined to generate much more power into one channel output. At normal ohm loads, this works well, but it does work the amp harder and eliminates the flexibility of multi-channel output. Why get less potential from one maxed-out amp, when several smaller ones may give your whole sound system more options?

From your sound system, connect each line level output that’s headed for a loudspeaker (such as monitor aux, main mix, or subwoofer) to the input of a channel on an amplifier. Amplifier inputs and outputs are commonly ¼” or XLR, and some models have both – others use Speakon connectors, “banana plugs,” or bare-wire posts. Use equipment with matching connections, or proper adapter cables.

For a sound system with good working “headroom,” amplifiers and loudspeakers should be run well into their potential, but not to the limit. A good rule is to use 80 percent, so a 100-watt amp can drive an 80-watt speaker with 20 percent power in reserve. This gives you quiet operation, and room for a little push when you want it. When placing two or more speakers in a chain, the chain’s “ohm load” is reduced by half for each additional speaker, which causes the connected amp to be able to provide more power (watts). Note, though, that total power from one amp channel is divided among all speakers in its chain, so be sure the adjusted total is still enough to power the speakers.

You can learn any new amplifier’s real performance by playing some recorded music you know well through the system. For stereo, send left and right signals to separate amp channels and speakers. With the amp’s output levels at zero, set the music at a good output level from the mixer (watch the meters), then raise the amp channel(s) being tested and note the settings at low, moderate and high volumes. Try the 80/20 rule for your live event, and adjust as needed. For audience “main” loudspeakers, plan for 1-2 watts per person (total, not per speaker). Smaller systems can easily carry much more power than they need, so you can grow into those first amps for years. On stage, it’s good to keep monitor volumes under control, but good-sounding “wedges” are generally rated 100 watts and up – so use as few as you can, and try to only run them as “hot” as needed for performers to hear their monitors more than the mains.

  3. Think Cooperation: Mis-matched equipment will not work like it’s supposed to!
Again, amplification power is measured in watts. The ease with which it can travel between the amp and speaker (or rather, the resistance it meets) is measured in ohms. Amps and speakers are “rated” to operate at certain ohm measurements (called the load), and it’s very important to match them. If they don’t match, then you can’t know just how much power is being applied.

Most amps and speakers you’ll see are rated at 8 ohms, so we’ll start there. The reason knowing your ohm load is important is that you can change it to suit your needs. You see, connecting a second speaker with the same ohms rating to one amp channel decreases the resistance (ohms) by half. So if your 8-ohm rated amp can also run at 4 ohms (many of them can), you could use a single 4-ohm amp channel to power two 8-ohm speakers. Adding a third matched speaker to that same chain drops the ohm load by half again, in this case from 4 to 2. Serious amps can run fine at 2 ohms (some for a limited time, others can do it all day), so you could drive three 8-ohm speakers on one 2-ohm amp channel.

Here’s a big caution: be sure your power (watts) and load (ohms) are matched in each speaker you include in a chain, or all your math is ruined. For example, you can use two loudspeakers that are 200 watts each at 8 ohms with an amp channel that provides 400 watts at 4 ohms; power is divided equally between the speakers. But if you tried to use the same amp to drive a 300 watt and a 100 watt speaker, the available power is too much for the smaller one and you’re likely to do some damage.

  4. Think Clarity: Your amps don’t just push your speakers – they pull, too.
To amps and loudspeakers, sound (especially music) is a constantly changing set of voltages. Except during silence, the speaker cone is always moving in a complex in-out pattern. When the amp “pushes,” the moving speaker cone wants to spring back to its neutral point. This constant back-and-forth movement causes the voice coil and magnet to work much like a microphone, creating a small “back voltage” that tries to follow the cable back to the amp output. At best, sound is muddy and unclear – but it can be downright awful.

Power amplifiers are designed to counteract this problem by “damping” the speaker cone’s momentum (like pulling back on an object you just pushed away). After matching power and impedance requirements for your system, it’s a good idea to look for amps with a superior damping factor (DF).

A power amplifier’s damping factor tells you, in a way, how good the amp is at controlling a loudspeaker. In this case, a higher number is better…

When one amp’s DF is higher than another’s, it tells you the amp with the higher rating can better control a speaker system (assuming all other things were equal, such as frequency response, distortion, etc.). At 100 or above, it’s quite good. Below 20-30 is a very poor damping factor. A low damping factor means an amp won’t handle loudspeakers of any great size. It’s a difference you really can hear.

Amp makers list DF as a number, but that’s pretty simplified. It’s a complex, scribbly curve that varies constantly when the system is running. And it depends on the speaker you use. And the music you play, the volume, wind blowing on the cone (ever run sound outdoors?) – even humidity and temperature!

Damping factors also hold a key to comparison-shopping! When two amps have equal impedance ratings (8 ohms, for instance), DF gives you a fairly level comparison of the speaker control of those amplifiers.

  5. Pick Your Possibilities: Is there more your amp can do? Oh, Yes!
After making the crucial measurements to determine your power and load requirements, there are more features on today’s amps that can help you choose one that’s perfect for you. Are you using subwoofers? Some amps have a dedicated subwoofer “mode,” or switch to let you match them. You’ll see all sorts of different indicators and lights on various amps, to show you when signals are clipping or when a protection circuit is activated. One may have frequency rolloff filters, another will feature a built-in signal limiter to help with continuous level control.

With some care, the process of selecting, connecting and getting the most from a new power amplifier can be much easier than you might think. Kingdom now offers many more power amplifiers to choose from than ever.

The effect of providing power mobility on body weight change

By Admin on June 3rd, 2009

The effect of providing power mobility on body weight change

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the provision of power mobility would have an effect on body weight in adults who were first-time qualifiers for power mobility. DESIGN: This was a retrospective observational study of consecutive subjects, who served as their own controls. The medical scooters, www.easymedonline.com records of 468 subjects who were approved for power mobility during a 17-mo period were reviewed. Three weight groups (12 mos before, at, and 12 mos after the power mobility evaluation) were evaluated with repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The weight changes on subjects in different age groups (45-54, 55-64, 65-74, and >74), in geriatric vs. nongeriatric groups, and in different body mass index (BMI) groups were analyzed. RESULTS: Eighty-nine subjects met the inclusion criteria. They were obese (49.4%), and most of them were geriatric (64%). Congestive heart failure (30.34%) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (22.47%) were the two main presenting diagnoses. The repeated-measures ANOVA showed no significant weight change in the three studied weight groups. Similar results were seen in the age and BMI subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: There was no statistically significant weight change in adults who were first-time qualifiers and who used power mobility for 1 yr.

Using the absorbed power method to evaluate effectiveness of vibration absorption of selected seat cushions during manual wheelchair propulsion

By Admin on June 1st, 2009

Using the absorbed power method to evaluate effectiveness of vibration absorption of selected seat cushions during manual wheelchair propulsion

Although medicare power wheelchairs and handicap scooters users are frequently subjected to oscillatory and shock vibrations, little research has been conducted to assess the whole-body vibration exposure of wheelchair users. The purpose of this study was to determine if selected wheelchair cushions alter potentially harmful whole-body vibrations transferred to wheelchair users. Thirty-two participants, who use wheelchairs as their primary mode of mobility, contributed to this study. Four of the most commonly prescribed wheelchair cushions were selected. Participants were asked to propel their wheelchair over a simulated activities of daily living (ADL) course while acceleration and force data were recorded. A repeated measures ANOVA showed no significant differences between the different cushions for the total averaged absorbed power (p = 0.190), the 50 mm curb drop (p = 0.234), or the rumble strip (p = 0.143). A repeated measure ANOVA for the peak curb drop absorbed power revealed a significant difference in the cushions (p = 0.043). The cushions that were most effective in this testing appear to be the Invacare Pindot and the Varilite Solo. Not only did those cushions appear to have the lowest values much of the time but also they did not display the highest values. When comparing results from a similar study, absorbed power appears to be as effective in determining vibration effects in the time domain as the methods in the ISO 2631 Standard.
